The Winter Lull

Thank heaven for -35c temps and only 6 hours daylight! It has the distinct benefit of forcing the entire population into a holding pattern for a while; allowing for a little bit of catch-up, and a few new projects.

Have to show you first what the Crafter got for Christmas this year from her hubby and tots!  I know taxidermy gifts can be a little freaky, but hey, who couldn’t love this face?

It’s a ptarmigan!!!

They are just the coolest birds! I will have to get some photos of the flocks hanging around here. Of course, it is the ravens that the Crafter truly loves: the ever-present watchers.  Maybe next Christmas…?

Here is what the Crafter made for her man as a gift (at the Yellowknife Glass Recyclers Cooperative, of course):

He is a big fan of  Innis and Gunn beer (that used to be in these bottles).  So now he has some recycled glassware to enjoy it with!

Lots of new product testing underway. A wonderful formula for liquid soap has the Crafter giddy with excitement. Here is a shot of the clear batch:

The really decadent shea butter liquid soap batch (not pictured here) is more opaque, but it is rich and bubbly and absolutely full of glycerin, that blessed humectant (ie: draws moisture to the skin).  It also happens to smell like bursting black cherries right now. Oh yum!

Some of this down time  was used to finally put together a new quilt for the dd.  I won’t tell you how many years it has been since the Crafter last quilted, but I can say it is more than a decade at least. So, this was a great project to get back into the swing of things. The pattern is a ‘Quilted Fish‘ creation with extra borders added to fit the double bed.  And yes, it is a little bright and garish, but then it will go in a bright, garish pre-teen girl room.

Of course, now a good tutorial on putting the rest of the quilt together would be helpful…. It should be ready to spread across her bed sometime…, in the spring?
